Obituary: Batten, Eddie

Age 79

BATTEN, Eddie Eddie Batten, born May 10, 1934 in Coalwood Montana to the late Cleo and Emma Lockwood, passed away from complications of her cancer on February 7, 2014.

Eddie will best be remembered for her hard driven work ethic and commitment to success as a woman and a single mother.

A graduate of Sandpoint Senior High in Sandpoint, Idaho she attended classes later in life at North Idaho College (NIC.)

Eddie worked in real estate in Spokane, WA for many years as an agent.

In the early ‘90s she bought the Oasis Apartments in the Spokane Valley.

As the owner of a small apartment complex she was tireless in creating homes for people rather than mere rental units.

As a business owner often her kindness and generosity to struggling residents overcame her sense of best business practices.

As one family member commented, “None of the renters are qualified renters.”

Somehow she made it work and in doing so, brought out the best in many young men and women.

More often than not her background checks were limited to a phone conversation with a parent of a young person.

As a mother she was a lifelong advocate of her children and grandchildren’s success.

Married to the late Robert Sleep of Sandpoint, Idaho she is survived by her children, Gordon (Jenny), Robynn, Brent (Tawnie) Bruce (Candace) and Jeff (Deana).

Her second marriage to the late Raymond Batten of Spokane, WA produced an additional two surviving daughters, Tammy Wheeler and Jere Batten.

Eddie survived her companion of seventeen years Norm Brooks who passed away in October 2012.

In the last two years of his life she provided as his final caregiver with a sense of devotion, love and compassion that few people could ever match.

Eddie was one of five Lockwood children.

Her brother James was killed in action while serving in the U.S. Army Airborne in Vietnam.

Her sister Gloria also predeceased her.

She is survived by two sisters Darlene Kennedy (Jack) of Spokane Valley, WA and Wanda Lockwood of Carmel, CA.
