Obituary: Shaw, Mariko

SHAW, Mariko Mariko Fujita was born in Tokyo, Japan on February 20, 1933 to Tsuyoshi and Inami Oda Fujita.

She died peacefully on February 6, 2014 in the home of her eldest son and three grand- children.

Mariko survived the fire-bombing of Tokyo during WWII, to see her home destroyed and her family displaced.

She married SGT Charles Venton Barker of West Virginia, the father of her six children, in 1955.

In the United States, she learned English and proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1968.

She was a beloved chef at the NCO club at Fairchild Air Force Base for 19 years.

She married MSGT Lloyd Earnest Shaw (USAF) in 1974 with whom she lovingly continued raising her children, ceaselessly and joyfully extending her gift of hospitality and giving to family and friends throughout the years.

She is survived by sister Kazuko Horikawa and brother Yukihiro (Tomoko) Fujita of Tokyo and by six children: Wanda Barker of Seattle WA, Linda (Dean) Keast of Kelowna BC, Carol (Jimmie) Horn of Escondido CA, Charles Barker, Jr. of Usk WA, Joni Jones of New Braunfels TX and Jeff (Jenny) Barker of Chattaroy WA.

She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.

She is loved and adored by many and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Westside Church of The Nazarene, 2820 W. Francis Ave, Spokane WA.
