Chiefs add Hungarian player

Hockey: The Spokane Chiefs selected 18-year-old Hungarian defenseman Tamás Láday with the 42nd overall pick in the 2014 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.

Láday, 6-foot-7 and 212 pounds, played 63 games during the 2013-14 season between four clubs at the U18 and U20 levels.

He joins forward Dominic Zwerger as the Chiefs’ two non-North American players.

“Tamás’ size allows us to get bigger as a team, an area which we felt we needed to improve on,” director of player personnel Chris Moulton said in a press release. “He is not afraid to engage physically.

“He has a good skill set for a player with a very large frame. He moves well for a big man, so he does a great job transitioning the puck. He looks to have a lot of upside and will make our team better in the future.”

WSU’s Cooper on watch list

College football: Washington State player Xavier Cooper has been named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards Defensive Lineman Trophy watch list.

Cooper, who will be a redshirt junior, is one of four Pac-12 defensive lineman included on the 40-member list. The winner will be announced on Jan. 14, 1015.

Cooper started all 13 games for the Cougars last season, making 50 tackles, including five sacks.

Women’s basketball: Christa Sanford has been promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach at the University of Idaho. Sanford, a Pullman High graduate who joined the Vandals program in 2008, will also coordinate recruiting.
