Obituary: Cox, Margaret Jane (Crossland)
Age 92
She was born June 2, 1922, in Brewster, WA to early pioneers of the Brewster community, George and Rachel Crossland.
Margaret attended all grades at Brewster, graduating on June 2, 1941.
She moved to Seattle in the Fall and went to business school for two years and worked for Travelers Insurance Company.
Margaret married Robert O. Cox on June 15, 1943.
Robert was a meteorologist for Pan American Airways and was transferred to Juneau, Alaska.
Margaret followed by boarding the Alaska Steamship, ‘North Sea’, in September 1943, once he was able to secure a job for her.
In Juneau she worked for the Corps of Engineers at the Sub-Port.
In Fall of 1946, they were transferred back to Seattle with their belongings shipped in a large wooden ‘fish box’.
The Maritime strike prevented them getting their furnishing until a week before Christmas.
Margaret was pregnant at the time and had son, Jim, in early January of 1947.
A year later they were transferred to San Francisco.
She stayed there while her husband was transferred to Guam for six months.
Then in 1950, the family moved back to Seattle where their second son, Jerry, was born a year later.
Six weeks after Jerry was born, Margaret and the boys boarded the Empire Builder train and headed east to their new home in Cleveland, Ohio, where Robert had secured a meteorologist position with the U.S.
Weather Bureau.
Again, Margaret kept this household in order for five years until their transfer back home to Spokane in fall of 1956, which the family was happy to return back West.
She resided in her Spokane home for 57 years.
Last year, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Margaret was the stay at home Mom, great cook, skilled seamstress and quilter and always had a handwork project in progress.
After Robert’s retirement, they enjoyed extensive traveling with and without the camper.
Margaret was an avid gardener.
She won a cookbook for her winning recipe of Rhubarb Cake in a Dorothy Dean Spokesman-Review Contest.
She volunteered weekly for over 25 years at Sacred Heart Hospital.
She was active church member at Plymouth and Heritage Congregational Churches and the Moose Lodge.
Margaret was an animal lover and faithfully supported Spokanimal and the Humane Society for Cats.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Baynard and Ernie Crossland, and two sisters Hazel Goodyear and Ruth Borhinger and husband Robert.
She is survived by her two sons, James.
F. and (Lois) Cox and Gerald R. Cox and Cathy Parsons of Spokane, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, a cousin, Darrell Crossland of Brewster and numerous nieces.
