Cavaliers, Commodores in CWS finals
College baseball: Tyler Campbell’s bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Vanderbilt a 4-3 win over Texas Saturday night in Omaha, Nebraska, and sent the Commodores to the College World Series finals against Virginia.
Campbell had only 21 at-bats this season when he stepped to the plate in the 10th. He sent a slow grounder toward shortstop C.J. Hinojosa, who charged the ball, but couldn’t get it to first in time to get Campbell.
Freshman Hayden Stone (3-0) struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings of relief of Carson Fulmer. Vanderbilt (49-20) gives the SEC a team in the CWS finals for the seventh straight year.
Virginia advanced with a 4-1 win over Mississippi. The Cavaliers and Commodores will meet in the best-of-three finals beginning Monday.
Wie, Yang lead at U.S. Women’s Open
Women’s golf: Michelle Wie steadied herself with pars over the last four holes in a wild third round in the U.S. Women’s Open, leaving the former teen prodigy in position for her first major title.
Wie made back-to-back birdies to build a four-shot lead, only to give it all back with drives all over Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. She salvaged a 2-over 72 for a share of the lead with Amy Yang, who didn’t make a par until the eighth hole in her roller-coaster round of 68.
They were at 2-under 208, the only two players still under par on a Pinehurst No. 2 course that was crispy and brittle.
Moore up by one stroke at Travelers
Men’s golf: Ryan Moore had an eagle and two birdies in a bogey-free 4-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Aaron Baddeley in the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.
The 31-year-old Moore had a 13-under 197 total at TPC River Highlands after opening with rounds of 63 and 68. He eagled the par-5 sixth, holing a 37-foot putt from just off the green.
Baddeley had six birdies and a bogey in a 65.
• Lehman on top, Triplett three back at Encompass: Tom Lehman opened a three-stroke lead in the Champions Tour’s Encompass Championship in Glenview, Illinois, shooting a bogey-free 6-under 66 before play was suspended because of a thunderstorm.
Lehman had a 13-under 131 total at North Shore Country Club, playing the first 36 holes without a bogey.
Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett is at 10 under after shooting a 67.
Lopez retains Eastbourne title
Tennis: Feliciano Lopez of Spain completed a successful title defense when he beat top seed Richard Gasquet of France 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-5 in the Aegon International final in Eastbourne, England.
American Madison Keys earned her first career WTA title by beating Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the women’s final.
• Bautista Agut, Vandeweghe win first titles: Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain and CoCo Vandeweghe of the United States won their first career titles at the Topshelf Open in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
Third-seeded Bautista Agut recovered from a shaky start to beat Benjamin Becker of Germany 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the men’s final.
Vandeweghe, a qualifier, beat Zheng Jie of China 6-2, 6-4 in the women’s title match.
Chaves wins Tour de Suisse’s eighth stage
Cycling: Johan Chaves of Colombia held off Roman Kreuziger and Bauke Mollema to win the mountainous eighth stage of the Tour de Suisse in Verbier, Switzerland, as Tony Martin moved closer to overall victory.
The 24-year-old Chaves attacked about 1 1/2 miles before the finish and finished 3 seconds ahead of his rivals.
Mohammedi stops Dudchenko in 7th
Boxing: In Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Nadjib Mohammedi stopped Anatoliy Dudchenko in the seventh round to move into position to challenge Bernard Hopkins for the IBF light heavyweight title.
Mohammedi improved to 36-3 with his 21st knockout. Dudchenko dropped to 18-3.
WSU alumni win at Seattle marathon
Running: Washington State University’s cross-country program tallied a win, and the season isn’t even in session.
Two of the program’s alumni took home first-place finishes at the Rock ’n’ Roll Seattle Marathon and Half-Marathon. Drew Polley, 28, a WSU graduate student in environmental engineering, won the full marathon by 6 minutes with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes, 52 seconds. Jonathan Lafler, 24, of Seattle, and Polley’s former Cougars teammate, finished first in the half-marathon after running 1:08:07.
The two ran together at WSU in 2008 and were training partners this fall.
Panthers hire Gerard Gallant as coach
NHL: Gerard Gallant and Jonathan Huberdeau had a wildly successful coach-player relationship in junior hockey.
The Florida Panthers hope they will again in the NHL.
Gallant was hired to coach the Panthers, a move that reunites him with Huberdeau, a young forward who is considered one of the biggest keys to rebuilding.
