Mt. Spokane dominates 3A district track meet

The Mt. Spokane boys and girls track teams’ regular-season dominance was evident by leaps and bounds as the District 8 3A meet concluded Friday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Each team qualified several athletes to the regional meet, which is next Friday and Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.

The Greater Spokane League champion Wildcat boys finished with 208 points, 80 ahead of runner-up University. The Mt. Spokane girls piled up 235.50, 101.50 in front of Shadle Park.

Ashlee Pedersen led the Wildcat girls pack, finishing with four firsts and two meet records Friday.

She won the 200 meters in 25.73 seconds, seven-tenths of a second better than the record set last year, and she clocked 58.35 in the 400, eclipsing the 2006 district record (58.43). She also ran the anchor leg on the winning 800 relay (1:44.76), teaming with Katie Nilsson, Ciara Bland and Cheyenne Konrad. The same foursome won the 400 relay on Thursday.

Pedersen was named the female track athlete of the meet.

“I’ve been kind of tight lately in my hamstrings,” Pedersen said after her record run in the 400 and before the 200.

She apparently loosened up for her final event.

“Hopefully the tightness will go away for (regionals),” Pedersen said.

Sabrina Keys and Megan Murphy of North Central were named co-field female athletes of the meet. Keys swept in the shot put and discus and Murphy won the triple jump (37-0).

The Mt. Spokane boys 1,600 relay team of Jacob Krantz, Cameron Goodman, David Hipes and Roy Hiatt won in 3:26.78.

Earlier, Goodman won the 400, Trevor Payne finished first in the shot (54-½) and Carlos Riojas won the javelin in a season-best 195-7 to pace the Wildcats.

Riojas and Shadle Park’s Cameron Duty were co-field athletes of the meet and Khalil Winfrey of Rogers was named the track athlete of the meet.

Winfrey and NC’s Isaac Wicks had two entertaining showdowns in the 100 and 200.

Wicks (11.14) edged Winfrey (11.15) in the 100 and Winfrey (22.51) returned the favor to Wicks (22.53) in the 200.

Tanner Anderson of NC won the 1,600 (4:16.97). NC’s Marcus Saugen took the triple jump (47-½).
