Area roundup: Mroz leads WSU men’s golf team to third place

The Washington State men’s golf team opened its season with a third-place finish at the Southwestern Intercollegiate in Westlake Village, California on Tuesday. The Cougars carded a 295 (+11) in the third round to bring their total to 873 (+21). WSU finished ahead of fourth-place San Diego State (876) and was nine strokes back of No. 25 USC (864). No. 3 Stanford (848) won the tournament title. Charlie Mroz led the Cougars with a 75 to total 216 (+3) and finish tied for ninth.

• The Gonzaga women’s golf team finished fifth at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, carding a three-round total of 882 (+18) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Bulldogs shot a 292 (+4) in the final day, led by a third-place finish from Raychelle Santos. She shot a 1-over 73 to total 213 (-3).

Women’s soccer

North Idaho College and Walla Walla CC played to a 0-0 draw. The Cardinals had a 21-4 shot advantage, but WWCC keeper Sasha Holt made 11 saves while NIC just missed on two other chances.

Pirate trio honored

Three Whitworth Pirates were recognized as Northwest Conference Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 1-7. Quarterback Ian Kolste (football, offensive), forward Rylan Berriman (soccer, offensive) and setter Maddye Dinsmore (volleyball) each claimed honors.
