In brief: East Central to be focus of town hall

EAST CENTRAL – The city of Spokane is hosting a town hall meeting about the future of the East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone St., on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.

The city wants to know how the center has been performing and whether it’s meeting the needs of the neighborhood.

City’s splash pads will close Sunday

SPOKANE – The city’s 17 splash pads are closing for the season Sunday.

ALS benefit walk set for Saturday

SPOKANE COUNTY – The 10th annual Walk to Defeat ALS is Saturday at Mirabeau Park, 13500 E. Mirabeau Parkway, Spokane Valley with registration starting at 9 a.m. and an opening ceremony at 10 a.m.

The 3-mile walk is put on by the ALS Association Evergreen Chapter. Last year more than 350 walkers raised $42,613. Funds raised go toward care and service programs in Eastern Washington, as well as to research and awareness about ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Heart and stroke walk/run planned

RIVERFRONT PARK – The American Heart Association is hosting its annual heart and stroke walk and 5K run on Saturday.

Opening ceremonies are at 9 a.m., the kid’s fast dash is at 9:55 and the timed 5K run and walk start at 10. All starts are at the Clocktower in Riverfront Park.

DAR to celebrate Constitution Day

MANITO PARK – The Daughters of the American Revolution’s Esther Reed Chapter is having a Constitution Day celebration at Manito Park on at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The celebration includes a play about the signing of the constitution.

Service group seeks volunteers

SPOKANE – The local affiliate of Rebuilding Together USA is looking for new board members and volunteers.

The nonprofit organization rebuilds houses of low-income homeowners, especially the elderly, disabled and families with children.

The group needs volunteers from skilled trade groups, organizations who are willing to sponsor individual projects and board members.

Last year, Rebuilding Together Spokane rehabilitated three homes – but the group’s goal is 10 or 12 homes every year.

Meet K9 Unit at Plante’s Ferry Park

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit will present Canines for K9s: A Furry Family Fun Day and Dog Walk on Sept. 14 at Plante’s Ferry Park, 12308 E. Upriver Drive.

The event will raise money for training and equipment for the K9 Unit and includes a two-mile walk, demonstrations, raffle drawings and games.

Walker registration begins at 9 a.m.

Other activities include a dog nail-clipping booth, $1 hot dogs, pop and chips, Name the New K9 contest voting and winner announcement and games for dogs.

Church to host Second Harvest

MILLWOOD – Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will offer its monthly Second Harvest Mobile Food Distribution from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the church parking lot.

Low-income families and those in need of assistance will be able to pick up fresh produce and perishable food. No appointment or documentation is necessary, but you must be present in order to receive food.

Camera club resumes meetings

LIBERTY LAKE – The Spokane Valley Camera Club will meet the third and fourth Mondays of the month, September through April at 7:30 p.m. in the Liberty Lake Sewer and Water District Building, 22510 E. Mission Ave.

Coming this month, digital night will be Sept. 15 and print night is Sept. 22.

Anyone interested in photography is welcome. Guests begin arriving at 7 p.m. to socialize.
