Johnson, Cougars knock off Bulldogs

Kailiana Johnson scored in the 92nd minute and Washington State came from behind to beat Gonzaga 2-1 in a nonconference women’s soccer match Friday night in Spokane.

Kourtney Guetlein assisted on the match-winner, sending a cross from the left side to Johnson, who finished inside the near post.

Brittany Don staked Gonzaga (3-4) to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 17th minute, but WSU’s Jocelyn Jeffers knotted the contest with a header 5 minutes later. The Cougars improved to 4-0-2.

• Hannah Diaz and Samantha Dion scored first-half goals and Saint Mary’s (4-3) blanked Idaho 3-0 in a nonconference match in Moraga, California.

The Gaels’ Jessica Castillo capped the scoring with a goal early in the second half.

The Vandals (0-6) haven’t scored in their last five matches. They play at Washington State on Sunday.

• Rashelle Fisher scored two second-half goals to help Community Colleges of Spokane (7-1, 4-0) blank Pierce (2-2-2, 2-1-1) 4-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference game at Spokane Falls Community College.

Makenzie Welch gave the Sasquatch the lead with a goal in the opening minute. Sarah Melvin scored right before the end of the first half to make it 2-0.

• Late goals from Jaimee Hulst and Haley White helped North Idaho (2-0-4, 1-0-4) secure a 2-2 draw with Chemeketa in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Coeur d’Alene.

Chemeketa (2-3-1, 1-2-1) scored twice early in the first half, but Hulst scored in the 83rd minute and Haley White knotted the game in the 89th minute.

Men’s soccer

Matt Gay scored two second-half goals and Utah Valley beat Gonzaga 2-0 in a nonconference game in Orem, Utah.

Utah Valley held a 19-12 advantage in shots, including 13-6 in the second half.

Gonzaga fell to 0-4.

• Community Colleges of Spokane scored three second-half goals – two coming from Devin Leon – and the Sasquatch shut out Pierce (0-5-1, 0-3-1) 4-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Spokane Falls Community College. Alex Opland and Peter Sokolis also scored for CCS (6-2, 4-0).

• North Idaho (5-0, 4-0) scored three first-half goals and eased past Chemeketa (0-5, 0-3) 4-1 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Coeur d’Alene.

NIC’s Hamidou Kante, Taylor Haman and Kyle Bender all scored in the first half and Matt Howard capped the scoring in the 67th minute.

Volleyball

Savannah Blinn had 32 kills – including six in the decisive fifth set – and Gonzaga (6-1) beat Wyoming (7-1) 3-2 at the Wyoming Invitational in Laramie, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 24-26, 15-9.

GU’s McKayla Ferris added 16 kills and nine digs and Lauren Joseph dished out 58 assists.

• Kyra Holt had 12 kills and six digs and Ver’Leea Hardaway added 11 kills as Washington State swept Virginia Tech (3-6) at the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Cougars (6-1) won each set 25-22.

WSU’s Chelsey Bettinson had eight kills and four blocks and Haley MacDonald dished out 35 assists.

• Jessica Hastriter led three players in double-digit kills with 14 and Idaho (3-6) beat Boise State (3-5) at the Idaho Nike Invitational in Moscow, Idaho, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24. Meredith Coba added 48 assists and 13 digs for the Vandals.

Also at the tournament, Emily Liger had 28 kills and Portland (4-3) beat Eastern Washington (4-2) 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 25-17. The tournament continues today.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (9-5) beat Mt. Hood (4-10) and Green River (9-5) at the Walla Walla Invitational.
