Trader Joe’s third in list of top 10 grocery names

C.R. Roberts (Tacoma) News Tribune

Although Stadium Thriftway, Metropolitan Market and Haggen might well have made the list, America just doesn’t seem ready for the level of grocery quality born in the Northwest.

According to the May issue of Consumer Reports, the most highly rated name in the “2014 Supermarket Survey” is Wegmans.

Never heard of it? Not surprising. It’s based in New York.

In second place comes Publix, based in Florida.

But you may recognize the third-place market: Trader Joe’s.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Fareway Stores, Market Basket, Costco (middling produce but great store-prepared food), Raley’s, Sprouts Farmers Market, The Fresh Market and Stater Bros.

WinCo earned 11th place, Whole Foods Market came in at 15th, Fred Meyer 19th, QFC 30th, IGA 34th, Piggly Wiggly 37th, Target 45th, Sam’s Club 47th, Albertsons 50th, Safeway 58th and Walmart Supercenter was rated 67th (of a total of 68).
