Obituary: Merck, Dolores

MERCK, Dolores A native Oregonian, Dolores G. Merck died on July 30, 2015 at the age of 87.

Born July 13, 1928 to Arthur and Bess George, Dolores lived most of her life in Portland.

She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1945, and then attended Lewis and Clark College.

In 1949 Dolores married Mel Merck.

They shared their life together in Portland as well as Spokane, Washington.

While in Spokane she was a member of the Spokane Club.

She was also actively involved in the building of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, and was a member of numerous community service organizations.

Dolores’s career began when she founded her own company in the 1950s, Dosie-Cravat, a high-end men’s necktie manufacturer.

In 1983 she became national sales manager of Old World Christmas where she worked until her retirement in 1998.

An avid golfer, Dolores was a member of Manito Country Club in Spokane and later Portland Golf Club.

She also enjoyed bridge, knitting, needlework and any craft which challenged her creative talents.

Her greatest passion in life was her family.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Mel, in 2007, and her brother, Robert, in 1945 while serving in World War II.

She is survived by her son Robert of Portland and son-in-law Richard Giger, and son Timothy and daughter-in-law Elizabeth along with grand- children Jonathan and Katherine of Spokane.

She is also survived by her brother Kenneth George of Aloha, sister Mildred Amann of Portland, and brother and sister-in-law David and Melanie George of Fountain Hills, Arizona.

Private interment will take place at Riverview Abbey Mausoleum in Portland.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 14, 2015 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 147 NW 19th Avenue, Portland, OR.

A reception will immediately follow at the church.

The family suggests remembrances be sent in Dolores’s name to the American Heart Association.
