No rush to succeed

Jacob Thorpe fearlessly predicts that Washington State’s 2015 football squad will rush for 1,000 yards this season. Wow! I would hope so.

Of 128 FBS teams in 2014, only four rushed for less than 1,000 yards: Kent State (900), Louisiana-Monroe (834), Wake Forest (479), and WSU (478). That’s right. The Cougs were the worst Division 1A rushing team in the entire country last year.

Not surprisingly, the combined 2014 won-loss record of the four previously mentioned schools was a less-than-scintillating 12-35. So if Mike Leach can’t lift the Crimson and Gray rushing game out of the bottom 3 percent in the nation (and take some pressure off the passing attack), he should be fired.

Perhaps WSU should start paying Leach (12-25 lifetime at WSU) to defeat a few more pigskin opponents instead of entertaining bored sportswriters during Pac-12 media days. If Bill Moos wants a comedian to oversee the gridiron program, how about hiring Adam Sandler or Henry Winkler of “Waterboy” fame? At least they’d draw a larger paying audience.

How about a coach?

WSU athletic director Bill Moos must be quite the talent agent to be able to bring the comedic genius Mike Leach to the Pullman campus.

It’s just too bad he didn’t bring a coaching genius instead.
