NFL notes: Chargers, QB Phillip Rivers agree to extension through 2019

Associated Press

The San Diego Chargers say they have agreed to a contract extension with quarterback Philip Rivers through the 2019 season.

The extension, announced Saturday night, comes as team chairman Dean Spanos has angered many Chargers fans by exploring a move to the Los Angeles area.

Rivers’ current deal was set to expire at the end of the season. He has said he’d be OK playing out the deal, but also said he’d be open to an extension, as long as talks didn’t drag out into the season.

Rivers has been San Diego’s starting quarterback since 2006. The deal reportedly is worth $84 million, with $65 million guaranteed.

Texans 23, 49ers 10: Brian Hoyer threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts III on Houston’s first drive in a victory over visiting San Francisco.

Colin Kaepernick failed to move the offense on his only drive, going 1 for 3 for 14 yards.

Vikings 26, Bucaneers 16: Jameis Winston produced mixed results in his first NFL action for Tampa Bay, while Teddy Bridgewater had Minnesota’s passing attack in prime form in Minneapolis.

Winston played the whole first half and finished 9 for 19 for 131 yards and an interception.

Bridgewater went 7 for 8 for 86 yards.

Chiefs 34, Cardinals 19: Kansas City backup Chase Daniel threw for three touchdowns in Glendale, Arizona.

Carson Palmer, in his first game since tearing an ACL last Nov. 9, was 4 for 4 for 77 yards, directing a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to start the game.
