It was a postseason game two games before the postseason begins.

Lewis and Clark rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to knock off the visiting Mead Panthers 59-56 in overtime in a Greater Spokane League girls basketball game Tuesday night.

The Tigers (14-5, 13-4 GSL) locked up the second seed to the District 8 4A tournament, avoiding a loser-out playoff to get into district and a first-round matchup against defending state champ Gonzaga Prep.

Mead (13-6, 12-5), as the fourth seed, will play University in a loser-out playoff, with the winner getting into the double-elimination portion of district. That game will be Tuesday at Mead.

It appeared Mead was on its way to victory in the first half. Using their two 6-foot-2 posts, the Panthers fed the ball continually inside to Sue Winger and Coreen Labish. The duo, who are headed to play at NCAA Division I schools, combined for 17 points in the first half. They combined for 11 more in the third quarter as the Panthers took a 44-33 lead into the final period.

Counting the final three minutes of the third, Mead went more than nine minutes without scoring. Winger’s two free throws with 48 seconds remaining, which gave Mead a 46-41 lead, were the only points in the fourth.

LC set up a nice play for guard Riley Lupfer, who got free behind a screen at the top of the 3-point arc. Her trey pulled the Tigers within 46-44 with 32 seconds to go.

Mead’s Payton Douglass missed the front end of a one-and-one with 14.2 seconds left, and LC hurried the ball down the court. Lupfer took a pass in the low post and made a leaning bank shot with 1 second to force overtime.

LC took the lead quickly in overtime and never trailed.

“We were flat-footed the first part of the game and Mead did a really good job of executing,” LC coach George Pfeifer said. “As the game wore on we became more assertive and we pushed the ball more.”

Lupfer finished with 24 points.

Central Valley 72, Mt. Spokane 31: Needing 27 points to become the GSL’s all-time leading scorer, Madison Hovren scored 28 as the visiting Bears (16-3, 14-3) cruised past the Wildcats (7-12, 5-12). The Hull twins, Lacie and Lexie, combined for 27 points to support Hovren. Isabella Allard led the Wildcats with 12. CV opened a 43-13 lead in the first half.

Gonzaga Prep 68, Shadle Park 40: The Bullpups (19-0, 17-0) eased to their 42nd straight victory. Laura Stockton led with 19 points and five assists, Oona Harrington had 12 points and Otiona Gildon added 11 points and nine rebounds. Shyla Carr led Shadle (5-14, 5-12) with 22 points.

University 49, North Central 25: Emma Kennedy scored 11 points, had 11 rebounds and four steals to lead the Titans (11-8, 10-7) past the visiting Indians (1-18, 1-16).

Ferris 61, Rogers 53: Jamie Tatko had a team-high 18 points and Lexi Erickson added 13 as the Saxons (8-11, 8-9) fended off the visiting Pirates (1-18, 0-17). Sarah Guertin led Rogers with 23 and Makala Peterson had 11.
