Whitworth men, women defeated

The 18th-ranked Whitworth men posted season-lows for points and field-goal percentage and the Pirates had their 16-game winning streak snapped with a 68-44 loss to Whitman in a Northwest Conference game Tuesday night in Walla Walla.

The Missionaries got 15 points from Matt Mounier. Jackson Clough added 12 points, Philip Chircu chipped in 11 and Evan Martin pulled down 10 rebounds.

Whitman built a 15-point first-half advantage and never looked back.

The Pirates shot just 12 of 42 from the field and were outrebounded 36-28. Kenny Love had 11 points and five rebounds and Matt Staudacher added 10 points for Whitworth.

The Pirates fell to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in the NWC. They’ll look to get back on track Saturday at Linfield.

Whitman improved to 15-5 overall, 9-2 in conference games.

Women

Whitman 70, (17) Whitworth 43: Heather Johns scored 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting and added 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Missionaries (13-8, 8-3) routed the cold-shooting Pirates (18-2, 9-2) in a Northwest Conference game in Walla Walla.

Whitman used a 14-0 first-half run and a 13-2 run to open the second half to take command.

The Pirates missed all 15 of their 3-pointers and simply couldn’t keep pace.

Whitworth’s Jessica Kramer scored a team-high nine points and K.C. McConnell added eight points and 10 rebounds.

The loss came after four straight home wins.

The Pirates will try to bounce back Saturday at Linfield.
