Basketball: Anthony Rice pushes West Valley boys past Pullman, into District 7 championship game

Anthony Rice scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and added nine rebounds as West Valley surged late and stunned Pullman 53-52 in a District 7 2A loser-out boys game Friday night at Lincoln Middle School in Pullman.

West Valley’s John Sage made a game-tying 3-pointer with 45 seconds left. Micah Lagerquist drew a foul on the Greyhounds’ ensuing possesion and made 1 of 2 free throws.

With 18 seconds left, the Eagles’ Brennen Folkins made a pair of free throws to put West Valley ahead by 1. From there, Pullman had three chances to win, but couldn’t convert.

Martin Herford added 10 points for the Eagles (15-7).

Lagerquist led the Greyhounds (17-5) with 23 points and 15 rebounds and Jake Cillay added 18.

West Valley will play at Clarkston on Monday to determine the top two seeds to regionals. Pullman was eliminated.

Inland Empire 5A

Post Falls 62, Lewiston 56 (OT): Dalton Thompson scored 18 points and Max McCullough added 17 as the Trojans (19-1, 5-0) edged the visiting Bengals (5-10, 1-4) for their 11th straight win. Lewiston’s Braeden Wilson hit a 3 with 34 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Lewiston’s Tystan Bradley tallied a game-high 20 points and Brady Merica added 11.

Inland Empire 4A

Lakeland 48, Sandpoint 30: Tyrel Derrick had 16 points and six assists, Jay Plunkett added 14 points and the Hawks (15-5, 3-1) built a 14-point first-half lead en route to a win over the host Bulldogs (7-12, 2-2). Sandpoint’s Davin Norris tallied a team-high 11 points and Slader Ray chipped in eight points and seven assists.

Nonleague

Coeur d’Alene 76, Moscow 33: Colby Daniels scored 17 points, Tony Naccarato added 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks as the red-hot Vikings (11-7) dumped the visiting Bears (2-13). Elliott Sparks added five assists for Coeur d’Alene, which shot 67 percent from the floor. The Vikings outscored Moscow 19-3 in the second quarter to take a 42-13 halftime lead. Moscow’s Collin Niehenke tallied a team-high 10 points.

Girls

District 7 1A

Medical Lake 48, Riverside 39: Bradyn Wegner scored 20 points and Cassidy Hagel added 16 as the fourth-seeded Cardinals (8-13) topped the fifth-seeded Rams (7-13) in Medical Lake.

The Cardinals advance to play No. 1 Lakeside Tuesday at West Valley. Riverside, which got 10 points from Julianna Trepanier, was eliminated.

Colville 36, Freeman 30: Elaine Taft and Aleena Wolfrum combined for 17 points and the third-seeded Indians (12-9) used a 14-6 third-quarter run to get past the sixth-seeded Scotties (5-16) in a loser-out game in Colville. Freeman’s Anna Lee, Isabelle Miller and Sydney Slather all scored seven points. Colville will play second-seeded Chewelah Tuesday at West Valley.

District 9 1B

Colton 68, Oakesdale 23: Savannah Chadwick hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 24 points in the Wildcats’ (22-0) rout of the visiting Nighthawks (13-8). The win was Colton’s 66th straight. Zoe Moser added 14 points and Rachel Meyer chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds for Colton, which will play in Friday’s title game in Clarkston. Logan Reed tallied a team-high 14 points for Oakesdale, which will play Liberty Christian in a loser-out game Tuesday in Clarkston.
