Chiefs rally, top Brandon in OT

Stewart’s winner caps comeback

BRANDON, Manitoba – Liam Stewart’s goal 27 seconds into overtime gave the Spokane Chiefs an impressive comeback on Friday night.

After falling behind 4-1 late in the second period, the Chiefs scored four straight and stunned the Eastern Conference-leading Brandon Wheat Kings 5-4 in Western Hockey League play. The win was Spokane’s fourth-straight over Brandon (41-9-4-2).

The comeback started with Dominic Zwerger’s goal with just more than a minute left in the second. Markson Bechtold and Zwerger added third-period goals, the last coming on a power-play with 3 minutes left.

The Chiefs converted 3 of 4 power-play opportunites. Spokane was outshot 30-16 through two periods, but held a 20-7 shots advantage in the third.

Jason Fram assisted on the Chiefs’ final three goals. Goaltender Tyson Verhelst stopped 33 of 37 shots.

Reid Duke scored twice for the Wheat Kings.

Spokane (27-24-3-1) remains in fourth place in the WHL’s U.S. Division with 58 points. The Chiefs close out their six-game Eastern Conference road trip tonight at Swift Current.

Their next home game is Friday against Calgary.
