Obituary: Smith, Jane Tighe

Age 85

SMITH, Jane Tighe A longtime Spokane resi-dent, passed away on February 7th, 2015.

She was 85.

A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, at St. Aloysius Church, in Spokane.

Jane was born in Princeton, New Jersey, to Arthur J. and Mary Elizabeth Tighe on March 11, 1929.

How did a young woman from Princeton find her way to Spokane?

A young Spokane man, Culver Smith, attended Princeton University from 1947-1951.

At the time, Jane was attending Maryland College for Women, but visited her home in Princeton frequently.

When Culver met Jane, it was the beginning of a lifelong love story.

Immediately upon his graduation in June of 1951, they were married in Princeton.

The young couple then moved to Spokane to begin their married life - which lasted nearly 50 years, until Culver’s death in 2000.

Jane is survived by her younger sister Patricia (Tighe) Walden; by her four children Hilary Smith, Christopher Culver Smith, Tighe (Marybeth) Smith, Dede Villani; and by eight loving grandchildren.

Family was the central theme of Jane’s life; she was a constant source of love, support and inspiration for her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family.

In her later years, she found a deep joy in her role as “Grandma Jane,” developing and maintaining special relationships with each of her eight grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Union Gospel Mission, which Jane regularly supported.
