Prep roundup: Timberlake girls win 3A State opener

Balance.

That’s what the Timberlake girls basketball team relied on in defeating Fruitland 47-43 in the first round of the Idaho 3A State tournament Thursday at Nampa, Idaho.

Keelie Lawler had 11 points and seven rebounds, Payten Rhodes added 10 points, and Allison Kirby had seven points, six rebounds and four assists as the Tigers (21-3) had eight players score in the victory.

The Tigers face a familiar foe in Filer, at 6:15 tonight in a semifinal game.

Filer defeated Timberlake in the state title game in 2014.

The Tigers are trying to reach their fourth state title game in five years. All three prior trips ended with runner-up finishes.

Filer 44, Priest River 38: Sydney Koyle and Haley Ackerman each scored 11 points and the reigning state-champion Wildcats (18-9) used an 11-2 third quarter to defeat the Spartans (16-8) in a first-round game.

Katyln Summers had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) for Priest River, which will face Fruitland at 1:15 p.m. today in a loser-out game.

Idaho 5A State

Lewiston 44, Eagle 30: Emilee Schlader recorded a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds), and Cali Moscrip added 15 points as the Bengals (21-1) advanced to the semifinals with a win over the Mustangs (16-7) at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho.

It’s the second straight season the Bengals have advanced to the semifinals. Lewiston, the 2011 and 2012 state champions, lost to Rocky Mountain in last season’s 5A tournament.

Lewiston will face Boise, a 60-52 winner over Highland, at 8 tonight.

Idaho 4A State

Sandpoint 49, Kuna 41: Madi Schoening’s 20 points led all scorers, and the Bulldogs (13-8) used a 17-6 third quarter to defeat the Kavemen (16-7) in a first-round tournament game at Timberline High School in Boise.

After back-to-back losses at last year’s state tournament, the Bulldogs are moving forward, advancing to the semifinals and a meeting against Century, a 52-34 winner over Minico.

Grace Kirscher added 12 points for Sandpoint.

Idaho 1A Division II

Dietrich 64, Lakeside 44: Katee Hubert had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Jacey Shaw added 18 and eight, and the Blue Devils (21-3) defeated the Knights (10-11) in a first-round state tournament game at Nampa High School.

Lillian Rhea led Lakeside with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Jordyn Nomee added 14 for the Knights, who face Council in a loser-out contest at 1:15 p.m. today.

Boys basketball

North Star League

Lakeside 75, Kootenai 54: Behind Takoda Abrahamson’s 21 points, the host Knights (9-8, 6-1) clinched the league title with a win over the Warriors (7-8, 5-3) at Plummer.

Jordan Nilson added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Lakeside, which will host Mullan on Tuesday in the first round of the 1A District II tournament.

Nonleague

Bonners Ferry 60, Clark Fork 22: Pat O’Hara scored 11 points and the Badgers (9-9) cruised to victory over the Wampus Cats (0-11).

Geoffrey Boudousquie led Clark Fork with seven points.
