WSU women’s basketball team tops UW

Lia Galdeira had 23 points and eight assists and Washington State dominated the second half to defeat Washington 83-72 in a Pac-12 game Friday night in Seattle. The win was WSU’s third straight over the Huskies.

Galdeira scored 14 of her points in the second half when the Cougars (15-11, 6-9) shot 55.6 percent. Tia Presley had 17 points, Mariah Cooks 16, and Dawyelle Awe had all 11 in the second half when the lead ballooned to 22.

Washington State, which had lost 36 straight to its rival before sweeping the Huskies last year for the first time in 39 years, had not beaten Washington by double figures since a 70-60 win on Jan. 10, 1981, which was the last game of the last three-game winning streak for the Cougars.

Jazmine Davis had 23 points for the Huskies (19-8, 8-7). Kelsey Plum, who had her conference record string of made free throws end at 35, had 18 and Talia Walton 14.

Whitworth 75, Pacific Lutheran 52: K.C. McConnell made 8 of 12 shots and finished with 21 points and seven rebounds and the Pirates (21-3, 12-3) took advantage of the cold-shooting Lutes (5-19, 2-13) in a Northwest Conference win in Parkland, Washington.

Pacific Lutheran made 3 of 18 shots in the first half and scored just 12 first-half points.

Jessica Kramer added 10 points for Whitworth, which forced 19 turnovers.

The Pirates will play at Puget Sound in today’s regular-season finale. The Loggers and Pirates are tied for second.

• Tickets for Gonzaga’s game against Pacific Saturday at McCarthey Athletic Center are sold out.

Men

Whitworth 68, Pacific Lutheran 39: Christian Jurlina led a balanced attack with 14 points and the Pirates (21-3, 14-1) eased past the Lutes (8-16, 6-9) in a Northwest Conference game in Parkland, Washington. Derek Isaak added 12 points off the bench for Whitworth, which outscored PLU 36-15 in the second half.

The Pirates can secure their sixth-straight conference title with a win today at Puget Sound.

• If Sacramento State wins the Big Sky Conference regular-season title, the school’s recreation and wellness center will be transformed into a temporary basketball arena and the Hornets will host the conference championship.

Sacramento State’s on-campus arena is not a suitable venue for the event, so “The Well” will be used instead. Roughly 3,000 seats, a portable court, lighting structure and basketball stanchions will be moved into the facility.

The Hornets are 11-3 in Big Sky play, tied with Montana for second.

Eastern Washington is currently first at 11-2.
