Boys basketball: Eagles, Rams, Cardinals all tied for first in NEA

Cameron Gay scored 24 points and Lakeside used a hot start to get past Riverside 66-50 in a Northeast A League game Friday night at Riverside.

The Eagles (14-3, 9-2) and Rams (14-3, 9-2) are now tied with Medical Lake atop the league standings.

Lakeside used a stifling defense to take a 38-21 halftime lead. Riverside made just 5 of 20 first-half field goals.

The Rams rallied late, cutting the deficit to eight with two minutes left, but Lakeside closed it out.

Spencer Reynolds added 19 points and Ryan Quigley chipped in 16 for Lakeside. Riverside’s Tyler Axtell led all scorers with 25 points.

The Rams beat the Eagles 63-56 in the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 6.

Lakeside, Riverside and Medical Lake all have three league games remaining.

Medical Lake 80, Colville 55: Jaelon Stith led four players in double figures with 20 points and the Cardinals (13-4, 9-2) dumped the host Indians (2-14, 2-9). Tellas Johnson and Cory Wagner each added 13 points and Donte Brown chipped in 11 for Medical Lake, which made 9 of 11 3-pointers. Colville’s Dallis Martin made 5 of 8 3s and scored a game-high 23 points. The win was the Cardinals’ fifth straight.

Freeman 54, Newport 45: Matt Harris scored 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds to guide the Scotties (8-9, 6-5) past the host Grizzlies (9-8, 4-7). Jake Phipps also scored 16 points for Freeman and Ryan Maine added 15. Newport’s John Lyon and Koa Pancho scored a combined 22 points and Chris Burgess pulled down 11 rebounds.

Deer Park 62, Chewelah 32: Nate Guske finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as the Stags (7-10, 5-6) used aggressive defense to get past the visiting Cougars (1-16, 0-11). Chewelah’s Chase Frizzell tallied a team-high 12 points.

Great Northern

Cheney 40, East Valley 35: Despite an off shooting night, the Blackhawks (5-13, 1-9) grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored 30 points in the paint in a win over the host Knights (5-13, 2-8). Cheney’s Jacob Whiteley scored a game-high 16 points. Tanner Jacobs led East Valley with 14 points.

Clarkston 63, West Valley 51: Trevon Allen scored 20 points and Trevor Sperry added 14 as the Bantams (18-1, 9-1) took control in the first half and eased past the visiting Eagles (11-6, 5-4). West Valley’s Martin Herford tallied a team-high 15 points.

Northeast 2B

Reardan 55, Springdale 53: Dan Peone forced a loose ball in the closing seconds and the Indians (10-9, 7-7) held on to defeat the visiting Chargers (8-11, 5-9). Reardan’s Brandon Reuben led all scorers with 21 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Peone finished with 17. Springdale’s Chandler Carr tallied a team-high 19 points.

Colfax 51, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 46: Kasey Johnson scored 16 points and Keith Gfeller added 11, all coming in the third quarter and the Bulldogs (17-2, 12-1) closed the game on a 7-2 run and beat the Broncos (12-7, 7-6) in Ritzville. LRS’s Cort Ruzicka had 19 points and 14 rebounds.

Northwest Christian 62, Davenport 37: Asher Cox scored 14 points and Ryan Ricks added 13 points and 15 rebounds as the Crusaders (14-5, 11-3) jumped ahead early and coasted past the visiting Gorillas (8-11, 5-9). David Olds added 11 points for Northwest Christian, which won the rebounding battle 37-25. Austin Zeller tallied a team-high 12 points for Davenport.

Wilbur-Creston 71, Kettle Falls 45: Nick Densley scored 14 points and Dorian Jaeger and Garet Townsend added 12 apiece as the Wildcats (13-6, 8-6) snapped a three-game skid with an easy win over the host Bulldogs (1-18, 0-14). Kettle Falls’ Sean Paiva tallied a team-high 10 points.

Northeast 1B North

Curlew 58, Northport 55: Aaron McCullough led a trio of players in double figures with 17 points and the Cougars (13-4, 6-2) fended off the Mustangs’ (7-9, 3-4) in Northport. Mathan Knapp scored 14 and Coby Grumbach added 12 for Curlew. The Mustangs’ Vithor Martin scored 20 points and Patrick Lamb added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Republic 45, Selkirk 40: Aaron Fritts scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and the Tigers (8-8, 3-4) edged the Rangers (9-7, 3-4) in Ione. Selkirk’s Jacob Couch scored 13 and Cole Dawson scored nine with nine rebounds.

Cusick 64, Inchelium 52: Alec Bluff had 21 points, 11 rebounds and five steals and the Panthers (10-6, 5-3) defeated the visiting Hornets (3-11, 2-6). Cameron Bauer added 13 points for Cusick, which won the rebounding battle 52-37. Inchelium’s Quentin Holford scored a game-high 25 points, including 19 in the first half. It was Holford’s second straight 25-point game.

Northeast 1B South

Wellpinit 61, Odessa-Harrington 52: Brandon Flett made 4 of 6 3-point attempts and finished with 20 points and six blocks as the Redskins (13-4, 4-3) rallied after halftime and beat the visiting Titans (9-8, 3-2). Cedric Bowen added 13 points and Triston Andrews added seven points and eight rebounds for Wellpinit, which outscored O-H 20-8 in the third quarter to erase a three-point halftime deficit. The Titans’ Carsen Weber scored 19 points and Shane Whitaker added 16.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 64, Valley Christian 39: Dallas Isaak scored 21 points and Payton Nielsen added 16 with 15 rebounds as the Warriors (14-3, 5-0) routed the Panthers (2-13, 1-3) in Coulee City. James Segalla led VC with 19 points.

Southeast 1B

Pomeroy 69, Oakesdale 25: Cole Mayfield scored 13 points and Memo Morfin and Scott Slaybaugh added 12 apiece as the Pirates (15-2, 10-1) routed the visiting Nighthawks (3-13, 1-9). Oakesdale’s Zach Dabolt had 10 points.

Colton 73, Liberty Christian 65: Grant Kinzer and Carter Dahmen scored 22 points apiece, Austin Meyer added 19 and the Wildcats (9-3) clipped the Patriots in Richland.

St. John-Endicott 52, LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 28: Robert Staples and Caleb Hudson combined for 25 points and the Eagles (8-9, 5-6) used an 18-3 second-quarter run to get past the Tigercats (0-10, 0-10) in St. John. LWK’s Chance Rice totaled a team-high 10 points.

Nonleague

Lakeland 68, Lake City 35: Tyrel Derrick made 10 of 14 shots, including 6 of 7 3s, and finished with 29 points, six assists and four steals as the Hawks (11-5) dumped the Timberwolves (8-8) in Rathdrum. Jake Ram added 14 points and Slader Ray pulled down nine rebounds for Lakeland, which made 13 of 26 3-pointers. Lake City’s Nick Hancock scored nine.
