Ex-NFL player missing after fall into lake

Football: Authorities are searching for a former Houston Texans receiver who fell out of a rented boat during a family outing at a Dallas-area lake.

The Collin County Sheriff’s Office says 37-year-old JaJuan Dawson wasn’t wearing a lifejacket Sunday night when he fell into Lavon Lake, near Wylie.

Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Havey says it’s unclear why Dawson fell overboard, but alcohol isn’t considered a factor.

Dawson was a 6-foot-1, 197-pound receiver from Houston’s Bourgeois High School by way of Tulane who went on to a three-year NFL career. He had 52 catches for 664 yards and two touchdowns in his pro career.

Bills coach arrested for punching boy: Buffalo Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer punched a boy in the face after confronting him and another boy about using his beach chairs while they fished along the shore near his Florida home, according to an arrest report released Monday.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office report says Kromer confronted the pair on Saturday. Kromer, 48, threw a fishing pole into the water, pushed one boy to the ground and then punched him, Deputy David Sanders wrote in the report.

Australia’s Mills will miss Olympic series

Basketball: San Antonio Spurs point guard Patty Mills will miss Australia’s Olympic qualifying series in Oceania after being ruled out of a 12-man squad containing fellow NBA players Andrew Bogut and Matthew Delladova and former Washington State standout Brock Motum..

Mills was unavailable for matches in Europe against Slovenia and Lithuania due to a shoulder injury, and Australia coach Andrej Lemanis said that resulted in him being omitted from next month’s two-game Olympic qualifier against New Zealand.

Gasol returning to Memphis: The Memphis Grizzlies have signed All-Star center Marc Gasol to a multi-year contract, fulfilling the team’s top priority this offseason.

The Associated Press previously reported Gasol had agreed on a five-year maximum contract worth more than $100 million.

Gasol, a 7-foot-1 Spaniard, averaged 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.62 blocks this past season.

Rough play riskier than heading ball

Miscellany: Heading takes the heat in youth soccer, but a study says limiting rough play might be a better way to prevent concussions and other injuries.

The nine-year look at U.S. high school games found that over one in four concussions occurred when players used their head to hit the ball. But more than half of these heading-related concussions were caused by collisions with another player rather than with the ball.
