Cougars edge UC Riverside

Ian Sagdal’s RBI single in the seventh inning was the difference in Washington State’s 6-5 nonconference baseball victory over UC Riverside on Sunday in Pullman.

Sagdal’s liner to right scored Jack Strunc. Ian Hamilton pitched two innings to pick up his fifth save. Matt Bower (3-0), who pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, got the win.

The Cougars (7-5) scored five runs in the first inning on four hits and three errors by the Highlanders (6-7). Cameron Frost had a two-run single.

• Anthony Lim hit a bases-clearing double to spark Whitman to a 5-2 victory over Whitworth in Walla Walla. Jeremy Druffel had three hits for the Pirates (7-4, 2-1 Northwest Conference) with starter Cory Mack (0-2), who gave up all five runs to the Missionaries (2-8, 1-5), taking the loss.

• CC Spokane and Lower Columbia split a doubleheader in Longview, Washinton.

Lower Columbia scored without a hit in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat CCS 5-4. A hit batter and three walks, one intentional, resulted in the winning run. Michael Heaton had three hits for the Sasquatch. Jake Olson, the fourth of five CCS pitchers, took the loss.

Tyler Thorson drove in Logan Jackson in the top of the 10th to give the Sasquatch a 4-3 victory in the other game. Anthony Contonio threw three innings of relief to get the win. Thorson had three hits and Evan Douglas three RBIs.

Softball

Host Whitworth (10-4, 3-1 Northwest Conference) split a doubleheader with Willamette (1-9, 3-1), losing the opener 3-1 and winning the second game 11-0 in five innings.

All four runs in the opener were unearned. Madi Perez (5-2) got the loss.

Kelsey Stroshine, Kayla Batastini and Peyton McMahon homered in a nine-run third inning as the Pirates ended the second game early. Batastini had three RBIs and McMahon and Kelsey Downey two each. Makayla Lefever (5-1) shut out the Missionaries on four hits.

Wrestling

North Idaho College’s Taylor Kornoely won the 285-pound title at the NJCAA national championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, while the Cardinals finished fourth as a team with 109 points. Iowa Central was the champion with 158.5. Clackamas (Oregon) was second at 131.5 and North Iowa third in the field of 40 teams with 113 points.

Kornoely defeated Richard Black of Neosho County CC 3-1 in overtime to claim the 285 crown.

Other NIC placers were Dajour Reece, who lost a 9-5 decision to Bryce Carr of Darton College in the 165 championship match, Michael Nguyen fourth at 125, Johnathen Dennis fourth at 197, Jordan Cooks fifth at 174, Tyler McLean sixth at 157 and Bryce Weatherston eighth at 141.

Basketball

The rosters for the boys and girls Idaho State High School All-Star Basketball Games were announced. The games will be played March 14 at North Idaho College with the girls game at 1 p.m. and the boys at 3:30.

The games will match seniors on teams representing northern and southern Idaho. The event will include a 3-point shooting contest with girls competing against the boys, plus a slam-dunk competition.

Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

Duane Ward of Sandpoint will coach the North girls team. His roster includes Anna Verhaeghe of Coeur d’Alene Charter, Kaidan Kelsey of Lakeland, Natalie Wheelock and Clarissa Smith of Lake City, Marquel Shawl of Lapwai, Emilee Schlader, Cali Moscrip and Lynzee Wilson of Lewiston, Sam Runkle and Shayna Allert of Post Falls, Katlyn Summers of Priest River, Elani Williams of Sandpoint, and alternates Savannah Woods of Bonners Ferry and Sydney Kuther of Nezperce.

Dave Stockwell of Lakeland will coach the North boys team. His roster includes Colby Daniels and Tony Naccarato of Coeur d’Alene, Michael Wilson of Grangeville, Gus Colburn of Kellogg, Tyrel Derrick and Jay Plunkett of Lakeland, Nick Hancock and Joe Pasquale of Lake City, Jack Akey of Moscow, Dalton Thompson of Post Falls, Lucas Arnzen of Prairie, Logan Feasline of St. Maries, and alternates Tucker Gust of Kellogg and TJ Placencio of Mullan.
