Beimel signs with Texas

Associated Press

Left-hander Joe Beimel and the Texas Rangers agreed to a $600,000, one-year contract that would escalate to a $1.5 million deal if he spends at least one day on the active major league roster during the regular season.

The deal, announced Friday, is not guaranteed, which means Beimel is assured only $98,361 in termination pay if he is released before the final 15 days of spring training.

Beimel, 37, was 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 56 games last season with Seattle, which allowed him to become a free agent.

Harvey dazzles in return

New York Mets starter Matt Harvey was impressive in his first outing in more than 18 months, pitching two perfect innings as the Mets beat Detroit 5-4 in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Harvey, who missed all of last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, struck out three. The 25-year-old All-Star hit 99 mph with his fastball.

Tigers starter David Price threw two hitless innings. He struck out two, walked one and hit Daniel Murphy on the right hand with a fastball. Murphy left for precautionary X-rays. Mets manager Terry Collins said the training staff felt it was just a bruise but added that he was concerned.

Nats’ Moore homers, drives in 5

Tyler Moore homered, tripled and drove in five runs, leading Washington past Atlanta 9-8 in Kissimmee, Florida.

Moore hit a two-run homer and a bases-loaded triple, and is 4 for 5 after two exhibition games. The Outfielder hit .231 for the Nationals last year with four homers in 42 games.

Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann pitched two scoreless innings in his spring debut.
