Obituary: Meyer, Donald D.

Age 88

MEYER, Donald D. Donald D. Meyer, born June 25, 1927 at Iron Mountain, MI, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2015.

He was the third of sixteen children born to Herman E. and Bernice L. Meyer.

He moved with his parents to Spokane at the age of fifteen and worked construction jobs until he joined the United States Marine Corps.

In 1946, he married H. Joyce Pickelsimer, and together they raised four children: Sheila (Schaefer), Steven, Sherry (Rose), and Scott, all surviving.

He has twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

In December of 1944, when Don was seventeen, he joined the USMC and fought in the Battle of Okinawa.

After the war, he returned to Spokane and married Joyce, who passed away in 2004.

Don worked for more than thirty years for the Great Northern Railroad and after retiring, he and Joyce traveled around the U.S. and Canada by motor home and he spent numerous weekends at his grandchildren’s soccer games.

He enjoyed fishing and camping.

He was always willing to help his children around their homes, had a great sense of humor, and loved politics, crossword puzzles, classical music, and history.

We all will miss his smile, support and love.

Don had such joy in his heart for all of his brothers and sisters and his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

They brought him such happiness, and he to us.

The family wishes to thank Don’s many friends at the Off Regal Lounge, where he was known as “The General.”

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support during this difficult time.
