Obituary: Fix, Harriet (Johnston)

Age 89

FIX, Harriet (Johnston) August 20, 1926- October 28, 2015 Harriet passed early in the morning of Tuesday, October 28th.

She was the daughter of Eric A. Johnston and Ina Hughes Johnston.

She was a devoted wife and mother.

She married William C. Fix in 1950.

Harriet and Bill had four children, Katherine Fix (1953-1991), Carol Fix (1954-1968), Allan Fix (1960), Harold Fix (1961).

She was born and raised in Spokane, WA.

Graduated Lewis and Clark High School in 1944.

In 1948 she graduated from Smith College with a degree in Economics.

She then worked for two years in Washington, DC for the US Treasury.

She was married to Bill Fix in 1950 in Spokane, WA.

Bill was in the Army stationed at Fort Ord, CA for the first two years of their marriage.

Harriet worked for Del Monte Properties for two years at Pebble Beach, CA.

She and Bill moved to Spokane in 1952 and built the home where they raised their children, and lived for 50 years.

Harriet was a believer in Spokane and worked and volunteered for 50-plus years to enrich Spokane and the surrounding area.

She was the Hutton School PTA president, President of the Spokane Symphony, President of the YMCA, on the Whitman College Board of Overseers and President of the Johnston-Fix Foundation.

Harriet enjoyed being at Coeur d’Alene Lake with her family and her friends.

She enjoyed hiking and being in the outdoors.

For 30 years Bill and Harriet and three other couples did an annual “fall foliage tour” traveling to different locations in the Northwest to explore and hike.

She was a devoted gardener.

She liked travel: She and Bill traveled to China for an extensive tour with Whitman College.

She traveled with Bill, Harold and Allan around the world in 1982 for eight weeks; footpaths tour of England and Wales with Bill and Allan; Alaska by air, rail, bus and boat and numerous trips to National Parks with Bill and her kids.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM Wednesday November 4, 2015 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Avenue.

The family requests donations be made in Harriet’s name to the Dishman Hills Conservancy of Spokane.
