Men’s soccer: Whitworth eliminated from division III tournament

Redlands erased a 2-0 second-half deficit and stunned the Whitworth men’s soccer team 3-2 in overtime in an NCAA Division III tournament first-round match Saturday in San Antonio.

The match-winner was an own goal. A Redlands player sent a low crossing pass in front of the goal that was deflected into the net by a Whitworth defender attempting to intercept the pass.

Karl Muelheims put the Pirates ahead 1-0 in the 13th minute with his 21st goal of the season. Sam Engle made it 2-0 with a goal in the 48th minute.

The Bulldogs, however, were able to respond. Jesus Avalos scored in the 55th minute and Kayvon Parso tied the match at 2 with a goal in the 61st minute.

Redlands (17-3-2) was the first team to score three goals against Whitworth this season and were the first team to beat the Pirates after trailing in the match.

Whitworth’s season ends with a 16-2-1 record.

CCS beats Tacoma, will play Sunday for NWAC title

Community Colleges of Spokane earned a spot in the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships title match with a 2-1 shootout-victory over Tacoma (13-4-4) at Starfire Stadium in Tacoma.

CCS’ Eric Sanchez-Flores and Tacoma’s Cody Crook scored goals in regulation, but the Sasquatch beat the Titans 4-2 in the shootout.

The Sasquatch (13-4-4) will play Peninsula in Sunday’s championship match at 5:30 p.m.

Crisler sends Gonzaga past Pacific

Jalen Crisler scored his second goal of the match in the 93rd minute to give Gonzaga (7-10-1, 2-5) a 3-2 overtime win over Pacific (1-15-1, 0-6-1) in a West Coast Conference match in Stockton, California.

The Bulldogs’ Ben White scored in the 89th minute to send the match into overtime.

Gonzaga’s season has concluded.
