WV-Yakima wins Sheridan Classic

West Valley (Yakima) defeated Eisenhower 25-20, 25-19 to claim the title at the Linda Sheridan Volleyball Classic Saturday night at Shadle Park.

The Rams, who won the tournament in 2011, also claimed championship-round victories over Prairie, Battleground and Kuna.

Mead took seventh place, Coeur d’Alene was ninth, Pullman was 11th, Ferris was 12th and University was 15th.

Cross country

Central Valley’s Briegan Bester led area girls with a third-place finish at the Sunfair Invitational at Franklin Park in Yakima.

Bester covered the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 54.63 seconds. Cascade-Leavenworth’s Erin Mullins was first in 18:21.21.

Lewis and Clark’s Katie Thronson was fourth in 18:56.21 and Coeur d’Alene’s Caitlin Conway was 11th in 19:21.55.

Northwest Christian’s Luke Schilter led area boys finishers by taking fourth place in 15:46.73. University’s Hunter Simpson crossed in 15:52.82, good enough for sixth place.

Graeme Schroeder of Tahoma won in 15:29.20.
