Elba earns raves for ‘Beasts of No Nation’

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming services.

Beasts of No Nation,”the harrowing drama of a child soldier in West Africa, is directed by Cary Fukunaga (who helmed the first season of “True Detective”) and stars Idris Elba as a brutal rebel leader. It earned rave reviews on the film festival circuit and was snapped up by Netflix, which is releasing it in select theaters nationwide the same day it debuts online. It’s not rated but includes violence involving children.

Pay-Per-View / Video-On-Demand

Dwayne Johnson takes on earthquakes in the disaster movie >“San Andreas,” saving his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) and their daughter as Southern California falls into the Pacific. It’s PG-13 for disaster action and mayhem and available in 3-D from some providers.

Tomorrowland,”the latest movie based (sort of) on a Disneyland attraction, pits George Clooney and Britt Robertson against robots from the future and an impending apocalypse. PG for sci-fi action and peril.

Also new: gambling drama >“Mississippi Grind”with Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn, currently in select theaters (R), and the indie coming-of-age comedy >“Dope”(R).

Available same day as select theaters nationwide is >“Experimenter”starring Peter Sarsgaard and Winona Ryder (PG-13) and the thriller >“Momentum”with Olga Kurylenko and Morgan Freeman (R).

Netflix

The poignant documentary >“Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me”(2014) profiles the music legend on his final tour as he struggles with Alzheimer’s disease. PG.

Jane the Virgin: Season 1,”a sunny, funny, American take on the telenovela starring Golden Globe-winner Gina Rodriguez as a single young woman mistakenly artificially inseminated during a routine exam, was one of the breakout hits of last season.

For the kids, there are new episodes of the Netflix originals shows >“Some Assembly Required: Season 2”and “All Hail King Julien: Season 2.”

Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara are millionaires who lose it all and land in >“Schitt’s Creek: Season One,” a Canadian sitcom.

Mad Monster Party?”(1967), an animated goof on the classic movie monsters, is a Halloween movie for little kids and adults with a nostalgic streak.

Hulu

Casual,”a comedy about dating, sex and modern relationships with Michaela Watkins as a newly divorced mother, is Hulu’s newest original series. New episodes debut every Wednesday.

Showtime

Amy Berg’s documentary >“Prophet’s Prey”(2015) examines the legacy of Warren Jeffs, who took control of the FLDS Church and is serving a life sentence for rape and child sexual assault.
