Obituary: Merian, Harold Arthur

MERIAN, Harold Arthur LCDR USNR Harold Arthur Merian passed peacefully with his family by his side on September 30, 2015 after a very long and courag-eous fight.

He is survived by his mother Peggy Merian Dunn, (Spokane); and sisters, Cynthia L. Hamilton (Spokane) and Valerie Merian-Deyo (Lake Stevens).

His extended family includes a step-sister Laurie Hassell and step-brother Aaron Bidel; two nieces, one great-niece, three great-nephews, and one great-great-niece.

He is preceded in death by his father Harold H. Merian.

Art, as he was called by family and friends, graduated from Joel E. Ferris High School, achieved a BS in Nursing from Regents College, SUNY, and an MS Nurse Anesthesia from University of New England.

He was a staunch believer in life long learning.

Over a long and dedicated career in the Navy, Art left Active Duty but remained a reservist where he was given the opportunity to serve and travel abroad.

He aided many people with his pragmatic care at many hospitals as a traveling nurse, and long term assignments at Children’s hospital in San Diego, Scripps, Kaiser Permanente, Fountain Valley, as well as numerous duty assignments in the Navy.

He specialized in Neo-natal and Critical care and there was nothing that made him happier than taking care of “his babies”.

Art was professionally affiliated with American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, US Navy Nurse Corps, Naval Officer Association and American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

Art was known for his love of friends, gardening, cooking, traveling, movies and the theater.

He was a proud thespian who saved his personal mementos from every play he was affiliated.

His smile and laughter will be missed but will always remain in our hearts.

He will be interred at Tahoma National Cemetery, in Kent Washington.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your local Children’s hospital, in honor of Harold A. Merian.
