The Spokane Indians’ narrow playoff hopes flew away in the 12th inning Wednesday with one big swing from Taylor Zeutenhorst’s bat.

Zeutenhorst’s two-run homer to right field energized a three-run 12th as the Everett AquaSox clinched the Northwest League’s North Division second-half title with an 8-5 victory at Avista Stadium.

After Yojhan Quevedo walked with one out against Dario Beltre (0-2), Zeutenhorst launched a massive shot to right-center to give Everett (20-14 second half) its first hit against the Indians (14-20) since the sixth inning.

Jordan Cowan added an RBI double for insurance and Ryan Horstman (1-0) struck out the Indians in order in the bottom of the 12th. Horstman worked two perfect innings, striking out four.

The three-game series, tied at 1, will end tonight when the Indians play their final home game of the season.

The Indians are 3-8 against the AquaSox this season.

Spokane was fortunate to get to the 12th, striking out 19 times and committing six errors.

Spokane stormed ahead 3-0 in the first, highlighted by Leon Byrd’s one-out, two-run double into the left-field corner.

Everett rallied back with one run in the second and two in the third, aided by three Indians infield errors. Logan Taylor’s one-out, bases-loaded walk in the third cut Spokane’s lead to 3-2, and Ryan Uhl followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop.

The AquaSox took a brief 4-3 lead in the fifth. Alex Jackson, who led off with a walk, took second on a routine flyout to left field and scored on Uhl’s single to left.

Spokane responded with a two-run fifth, starting with Dean Long’s infield single and Darius Day’s double off the wall in left. After LeDarious Clark walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases, and Sherman Lacrus struck out for the second out, reliever Rohn Pierce balked in the tying run and threw a wild pitch to make it 5-4.

Everett tied it in the sixth as Zeutenhorst led off with a double to left and scored on Drew Jackson’s one-out single.

Lacrus grounded in to an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Indians relievers threw five hitless innings before the big 12th.

Note

Second baseman Travis Demeritte, who led all Class A batters with 25 homers in 2014, was added to the Indians’ roster for the rest of the season. Demeritte was a first-round pick in 2013.
