Obituary: Broxson, Margaret Doreen

Age 89

BROXSON, Margaret Doreen

The world lost a beautiful soul with the passing of Margaret Doreen Brough Broxson.

Margaret died peacefully on April 14, 2016 at Holy Family Hospital in the company of her sons, Rod and David Broxson, and her granddaughter, Ann Finke.

Margaret was born to William and Gertrude Brough on April 29, 1927 in Birmingham, England and grew up in Stafford, England.

She met the love of her life Melburn “Bud” Broxson (an American who was stationed in England during WWII) at a Stafford bus stop when both had been stood up by their dates.

They were together thereafter.

Margaret and Melburn were married on September 2, 1944 in Stafford.

Margaret came to the United States aboard the Queen Mary with their daughter, Janis, in tow and pregnant with Rod.

She docked in New York and took a train to Walla Walla, WA.

becoming the first war-time bride in Washington state.

Melburn followed her six months later aboard the Queen Elizabeth.

They stayed in Walla Walla for four years before moving to Seattle where their youngest child, David, was born in 1952.

Margaret and her family moved to Spokane in 1960 and she spent the rest of her days there.

Margaret was a devout Catholic.

She was married to Melburn for 57 years until his passing June 8, 2002.

Margaret cherished time spent with her family and friends and loved sitting on her porch with the neighborhood kids running about.

She loved to collect knickknacks at yard sales and enjoyed many camping trips where she was known to whip up a tasty breakfast.

She was always up for a new adventure, like the time she jumped on the back of David’s motorcycle and went tearing down the highway at 140 mph.

She got to ride in a B-17 (the plane her husband flew in during the war) when; on the spur of the moment, a man from the 8th Air Force, who knew Melburn, bought her a ticket at a local air show.

She was a member of the V.F.W.

Post 51 Auxiliary where Melburn was first Post Commander.

She wasn’t quite as adventuresome when it came to food.

Margaret never ate a hot dog and didn’t try pizza until she was 86 years old.

Margaret is survived by her children, Janis, Rod and David (Danielle); nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; sisters Phyllis and Norah.

Preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother.

A special thanks to Ann and Jeff Finke.
