The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service is asking for the public’s help in locating the owner of a black labrador retriever that was rescued from Newman Lake after nearly drowning.

Residents on Honeymoon Bay heard the lab’s cries of distress early Monday morning, according to a news release. The dog had apparently fallen through the ice at Newman Lake’s southwest corner and was unable to climb out.

Residents grabbed a plank for the dog and were able to fish him out of the water.

“In a few more minutes, he would have been gone,” resident Elizabeth Huckaby said in the news release.

The dog, nicknamed Newman because he was found in Newman Lake, was treated for signs of hypothermia and has made a full recovery, according to the release. Newman has no collar or microchip, leaving SCRAPS officers unable to find his owner.

Anyone with information on the dog or owner is asked to call SCRAPS at 509-477-2532 using the animal I.D. 435132.
