San Francisco to announce new LAPD veteran as police chief

SAN FRANCISCO – The mayor of San Francisco plans to announce that he has picked a veteran Los Angeles deputy chief to lead the city’s police department, which has been under scrutiny after a series of racially charged incidents.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Mayor Ed Lee plans to announce Tuesday that he has hired 52-year-old William Scott to lead the police department.

Scott, who is African-American, is a 25-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department and heads the department’s 1,700-member South Bureau.

Former Chief Greg Suhr stepped down in May after mounting pressure.

Lee forced Suhr to resign after police fatally shot two minority suspects carrying knives, then transcripts surfaced showing officers using racial slurs in text messages and a young black woman was shot dead as police tried to pull her from a stolen car.
