Area roundup: Whitworth baseball team runs record to 11-0
Jeremy Druffel slugged two home runs and undefeated Whitworth beat Whitman 10-5 on Sunday to sweep the three-game series in Spokane.
The Pirates (11-0, 3-0 Northwest Conference) continued their program-best start by pounding out 15 hits, taking a 6-5 lead on Anthony Bonilla’s single that scored Jordan McGowan, who had doubled.
Arory Milyard (2-0) got the win with five innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit and no walks.
Druffel had three hits, including a triple, and four RBIs. Matthew Nelson also has three hits, including a homer.
Houston Baptist 9, Washington State 5: Christian Thames hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead the Huskies (5-3) to a victory over the Cougars (3-5) at the Al Ogletree Classic in Edinburg, Texas.
Five Cougars had two hits with Patrick McGrath slugging a home run. Colby Nealy (0-1), the third of seven WSU pitchers, got the loss in the final game of a season-opening, 11-day, eight-game road trip.
Notre Dame 7, Gonzaga 6: Rich Sanchez’s bases-loaded, no-outs single drove in the winning run in the ninth inning for the Fighting Irish (4-3) for a victory over the Bulldogs (4-4) at the Alamo Irish Classic in San Antonio.
Patrick Chung and Jeffrey Bohling, the latter with a homer, had two hits each for Gonzaga. Taylor Jones doubled, extending his season-long hitting streak to eight games. Calvin LeBrun (1-1) got the loss.
Softball
Whitworth 7-3, Lewis & Clark 2-1: The Pirates (7-1, 4-0) endured several rain delays before finally sweeping a Northwest Conference doubleheader from the Pioneers (5-7, 0-4) in Portland.
Michelle Silva hit a two-run double and later came around to score in a three-run fifth inning that sent the Pirates on their way to a victory in the opener. Madi Perez (2-1) got the win with a complete-game, five-hit effort in which she struck out five and walked none.
Alyssa Hall and Myranda Ramirez had three hits each and Kelsey Downey two, including a home run, in the Game 2 victory. Makayla Lefever (4-0) went the distance, giving up seven hits and no walks.
CC Spokane sweeps pair: The Sasquatch (4-0) defeated Southwestern Oregon 13-9 and Grays Harbor 9-2 at the NWAC Preseason Crossover tournament in Richland.
In the victory over Southwestern Oregon, Mackenzie Norwill had a bases-clearing triple and a two-run homer to left-center field that hit a truck while also picking up the win in the circle. Courtney Kent was 5 for 5 with two doubles.
Michele Strauss got the victory in the second game with Hailey Bailey getting three hits, including a two-run double.
CCS outscored opponents 51-12 in the two-day tournament.
