In Brief: Brooke Henderson, Mirim Lee share lead at Women’s PGA

GOLF: Brooke Henderson and Mirim Lee withstood a wild weather day to share the lead at 2 under halfway through the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington.

Playing in the afternoon, Henderson and Lee fought through a mix of heavy rain, wind and a significant drop in the temperature. After six straight pars, Henderson birdied the par-3 17th, but the 18-year-old Canadian bogeyed the 18th for a 2-over 73 that dropped her back into a tie with Lee.

Lee, who shot a 69, started on the back nine and surged when she got to the front, making three birdies before dropping a shot late.

Berger takes lead in Memphis: Daniel Berger shot a season-best 6-under 64 to take a three-stroke lead in the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee.

Berger had six birdies in his bogey-free morning round to reach 9-under 131 at TPC Southwind, and nobody caught him atop the leaderboard. Berger has started well, despite breaking in a new driver and 3-wood after his old clubs finally cracked last week from age.

Tom Hoge, part of a three-way tie for the lead after the first round, was second after a 69. He birdied the final two holes in the next to last group.

Tardy, Vaughn help U.S. pull even: Bailey Tardy and Monica Vaughn teamed to win two matches to help the United States tie Britain and Ireland 3-3 after the first day of the Curtis Cup amateur matches at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Dublin, Ireland.

Tardy and Vaughn beat Meghan MacLaren of England and Maria Dunne of Ireland 1 up in the morning foursomes matches to pull the U.S. to 2-1 at Dun Laoghaire. In the afternoon fourball session, Tardy and Vaughn topped MacLaren and fellow English player Alice Hewson 2 and 1.

Jobe leads Senior Players, Langer stroke back: Two-time defending champion Bernhard Langer pulled within a stroke of leader Brandt Jobe on Friday in the Constellation Senior Players Championship.

Langer shot a 2-under 68 at windy Philadelphia Cricket Club in the third of the PGA Tour Champions’ five major championships. Jobe topped the leaderboard at 2 under after his second straight 69.

Penalty kick helps Chile down Bolivia

SOCCER: Arturo Vidal scored his second goal of the game on a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time and Chile kept alive its hopes of advancing in Copa America with a 2-1 victory over Bolivia in Group D play at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Defending Copa America champion Chile ended a three-game losing streak. Bolivia has lost six straight and has allowed at least two goals in each of its last 12 games.

Chile was awarded the penalty try after Luis Gutierrez was called for a hand ball.

Messi powers Argentina past Panama 5-0: Lionel Messi scored three goals in a dazzling second-half display in his return from a back injury, and Argentina beat Panama 5-0 to clinch a spot in the knockout round of the Copa America Centario at Solider Field in Chicago.

Payet lifts France over Romania in Euro 2016: After scoring one goal and setting up another in France’s opening win at the European Championship, Dimitri Payet left the field in tears.

The West Ham forward, now hitting his career peak at 29, was playing for his country at a major tournament for the first time. He thrived, playing a part in both goals as France beat Romania 2-1 at the Stade de France in Paris.

AUTO RACING: Joey Logano posted a lap of 199.557 mph to win the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

Byron passes Crafton for Texas truck win: Rookie driver William Byron passed Matt Crafton with five laps to go to win the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Texas.

It was the second career victory for the 18-year-old Byron, who graduated from high school last month.

Munoz earns first career IndyCar pole at Texas: Carlos Munoz earned his first IndyCar Series pole with a two-lap average of 217.137 mph at the high-banked Texas Motor Speedway.

Scott Dixon, the defending race winner at Texas, qualified second at 216.901 mph for Saturday night’s Firestone 600.

TCU drills Texas A&M in super regional

COLLEGE BASEBALL: Luken Baker hit his fifth home run in nine games, Jared Janczak went a career-best 7 2/3 innings, and TCU beat Texas A&M 8-2 in the opening game of the College Station Super Regional at Blue Bell Park in College Station, Texas.

Baker gave TCU a 5-2 lead with his third-inning homer. He scored again in the fifth, advancing from second on a wild pitch, and Ryan Merrill’s double later in the inning scored two more.

No. 3 national seed Miami, East Carolina and Arizona each moved within a victory of the College World Series after winning their super-regional openers.

Johnny Ruiz hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the eighth inning, to lead the Hurricanes in a 12-7 victory over Boston College in Coral Gables, Florida.

Travis Watkins’ continued his power surge with a grand slam and two-run homer in East Carolina’s 8-6 win over No. 5 Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.

Arizona shut out No. 6 Mississippi State 1-0 in Starkville, Mississippi, with Bobby Dalbec allowing five hits in 8 2/3 innings hours after he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox.

Froome seizes lead

MISCELLANY: Two-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome seized the overall lead at the Criterium du Dauphine after winning the fifth stage.

Froome attacked with about 2 1/2 kilometers left, and his former teammate Richie Porte was the only one able to follow the pace on the final climb.

Overnight leader Alberto Contador crossed in fifth, and dropped to third overall, 27 seconds back. Porte sat in second place, seven seconds behind Froome.

Trainer goes 1-2-3 in Belmont’s New York Stakes: Trainer Chad Brown dominated the $500,000 New York Stakes, saddling the first three finishers in the race for fillies and mares on the turf at Belmont Park.

Eagles player accused of sexual assualt: Police are investing an allegation that a member of the Philadelphia Eagles sexually assaulted a dancer at a strip club.

Authorities would not identify the individual, but the team said wide receiver Nelson Agholor was under police investigation.
