Associated Press

Kyle Collinsworth, the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, scored 13 points and had two key assists late in the game as Brigham Young defeated Santa Clara 72-60 in the quarterfinal round of the WCC basketball tournament on Saturday.

BYU (23-9) will face the winner of No. 2 seed Gonzaga-No. 7 Portland in a semifinal on Monday. Gonzaga has eliminated BYU in the last two tournament championship games.

The Cougars rushed out to a 21-7 lead but Santa Clara twice came within one point, each time on a Jared Brownridge 3-pointer. The last made it 55-54 with 6:19 to play.

Collinsworth, who finished with six assists, dished to Kyle Davis for a layup and then found Chase Fischer for a 3-pointer that hit nothing but net for a 61-54 lead.

Brownridge led Santa Clara (11-20) with 30 points. Santa Clara made one 3-pointer and had no assists in the first half.

Saint Mary’s 60, Loyola Marymount 48: Dane Pineau had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Emmett Naar scored 14 with six assists to help the top-seeded Gaels beat the Lions.

The Gaels will play No. 4 seed Pepperdine (18-12) in the semifinals Monday. The Waves beat Saint Mary’s (26-4) in both regular-season matchups this season.

Loyola Marymount (14-17) led 29-25 at the break, but went cold in the second half.

Steven Haney made a 3-pointer to put the Lions up 40-38 with 10:58 to play, but Saint Mary’s hit three 3s during a 14-1 run that gave the Gaels a 52-41 lead with 4:59 left.

LMU, which went nearly seven minutes without a field goal, trailed by at least nine the rest of the way.

Saint Mary’s shot 59 percent from the field, while the Lions hit just 8 of 30 (26.7 percent), in the second half.

Haney led LMU with 19 points.

Pepperdine 90, San Francisco 86: Jeremy Major hit five 3s and matched a season-high with 28 points to lead the fourth-seeded Waves past the Dons.

Stacy Davis added 18 points and Lamond Murray Jr. had 16 for the Waves (18-12), who shot 52.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range (9-18).

San Francisco led 37-36 at the half but the Waves seized control early in the second, taking a 66-56 lead on a Jett Raines layup with 8:56 left. The Dons (15-15) battled back to 78-74 on a Devin Watson layup, but two free throws and a dunk by Murray pushed the Pepperdine lead back to eight and San Francisco never recovered.

Watson tied a season best with 33 points to lead San Francisco. Tim Derksen added 23.
