NEW YORK — Propelled by a diverse cast led by Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, Antoine Fuqua’s “The Magnificent Seven” topped North American theaters with $34.7 million in ticket sales in its debut weekend.

The appeal of “The Magnificent Seven,” made for about $90 million by MGM and distributed by Sony, rested partly in presenting an old-fashioned Western with a more modern cast. The film is a remake of the 1960 John Sturges Western, which itself was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai.”

The animated Warner Bros. release “Storks,” about birds who have given up baby deliveries for consumer goods, opened in second place with $21.3 million, according to final studio figures Monday.
