Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust art contest: “The Messenger”

Margo Sophie Hawkins

Margo Sophie Hawkins, a seventh-grader at the Odyssey Program at Libby Center won the middle school division of the Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust art contest.

My piece depicts a pair of hands releasing a bird, symbolic of a message being sent or the truth being spread. The bird is meant to show a desperate attempt by the oppressed to break down the walls of propaganda that had blinded the people and nations of the world. The bird was inspired by the fact that messenger pigeons were used by American soldiers in World War II. The band on its leg resembles the arm bands Jews were forced to wear in the cities as identification to the Nazis. My piece is constructed of found objects and papier-mâché.
