The recent landslide at Porcupine Bay above the Spokane Arm of Lake Roosevelt has added a new “geology at work” opportunity to an Ice age Floods Institute lecture and field trip planned for Saturday.

Linda McCollum, a geology professor at Eastern Washington University, and her husband Mike McCollum, an earth scientist, will lead a bus tour to the site to sort out the story of how and why the landslide occurred.

The stop will be just one feature of a two-part program including a free lecture on Friday at 7 p.m. at the JFK Auditorium on the Eastern Washington University campus in Cheney.

Linda McCollum will present “Megaflood Pathway Down Glacial Lake Columbia from Cheney to Fort Spokane” using slides to identify important features along the great glacial Lake Missoula outburst megaflood pathway.

Saturday’s geology in action field trip is $75 and will depart at 7:30 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. The bus tour will include a stop at Wellpinit to hear archaeologists give a brief history of their work involving the Spokane Tribe.
