Major Crimes detectives responded to a deadly shooting Tuesday in downtown Spokane along North Washington Street.

Cpl. Ron Van Tassel said police received a shooting report at 3:45 p.m. William Ward said he came upon the scene between Main Avenue and Spokane Falls Boulevard just after the incident. A bystander performed CPR until medics arrived, he said.

Ward said it looked like the man had fallen out of a blue car and he was bleeding heavily.

Medics were unable to revive the man and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Van Tassel said there was no threat to the community in the wake of the shooting, adding, “We don’t know if it was accidental or on purpose.”

Police spent the evening interviewing witnesses and checking video surveillance footage from nearby businesses.

Washington Street was closed between Riverside Avenue and Spokane Falls Boulevard for several hours.
