Spokane Valley family escapes burning home thanks to smoke alarm

A Spokane Valley family safely evacuated their home early this morning after a small house fire burned parts of the attic.

Spokane Valley Fire crews responded to the single-story home in the 19500 block of East Trent Avenue shortly before 3:30 a.m.

Firefighters found a ceiling fan lying on the kitchen floor. They quickly extinguished a small, slow-burning fire in the attic above the kitchen, according to the release.

A mother and her two children, ages 13 and 11, were sleeping at the time fire started, but were alerted by a smoke alarm and evacuated with a small dog before firefighters arrived, the news release states.
