NIC men, women claim victories

Markus Golder scored 21 points and Sam Dowd and Zaequan Satterthwaite finished with double-doubles to power the North Idaho Cardinals (15-1, 3-0) to an 89-75 men’s basketball victory over the visiting Big Bend Vikings in Northwest Athletic Conference action on Monday night.

Golder led the Cardinals with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Dowd added 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting and also handed out 10 assists. Satterthwaite chipped in with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Reserve Niko Bevens nailed 4 of 5 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, while Jalen Burkett delivered 12 points and eight rebounds for North Idaho.

Big Bend’s Jacob McCord led all scorers with 26 and tied for game-high honors with 12 boards.

Giavanna Sorn scored a game-high 16 points and snared six rebounds and Lana Berg added 15 points and eight boards to propel the North Idaho Cardinals women to a 73-49 win over the visiting Big Bend Vikings (10-8, 2-3) in NWAC play.

Cierra Dvorak contributed 12 points and four assists for the Cardinals (8-6, 1-2), while Whitney Meier added 10 points.

North Idaho turned the game into a rout by outscoring the Vikings 38-19 in the second half.

Honors

Gonzaga Bulldogs sophomore Jill Barta was named the West Coast Conference women’s basketball player of the week for the second time this season. Barta scored 22 points in a win over LMU and followed that with a career-high 33 points in a win against Saint Mary’s.
