Three older teen males have been taken into custody on suspicion of vandalizing the newly-remodeled Salk Middle School on Monday night.

Officers responded to an alarm at Salk at about 11 p.m., according to a Spokane Police Department news release. There were multiple alarms tripped in various parts of the school and officers called for backup and K-9 assistance. Much of the building is under construction, which made access easier, police spokeswoman Teresa Fuller said.

In the school’s kitchen, officers found the boys had opened containers of spices, oats and other pantry items. They had spread the food across the school, filling drinking fountains and hallways with the ingredients.

A 5-gallon bucket of paint was found overturned in the kitchen, and a soap dispenser was torn off the wall. Police said damage estimates were in the tens of thousands of dollars.

A little after 1:30 p.m., police found the three suspects on the roof of the school. All three boys were booked into Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center for second-degree burglary and first-degree malicious mischief.
