Man dead after car hit a tree north of Newman Lake

By Drew Gerber The Spokesman-Review

A collision north of Newman Lake left one man dead Wednesday after his car jumped a sharp turn and ran into a tree.

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies responded at 4:30 p.m. to a one-vehicle crash on Muzzy Road, east of Thompson Creek Road. The driver was found bleeding and unconscious, the sheriff’s office said in a news releases.

The man, who was alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene after Newman Lake Fire personnel attempted life-saving efforts for more than a half-hour, the sheriff’s office said.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the driver’s name.

Initial information reveals the mid-90s Ford Explorer took a sharp curve too fast as it headed south on Muzzy Road, causing the vehicle to veer into a tree.

Investigators said the driver was not wearing a seat belt, but it is not yet known if the driver was impaired or if other factors were at play.

The crash is being investigated by Spokane County Traffic collision investigators, and they ask anyone who witnessed the incident to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.
