Mariners Pregame: Roster roulette, another trade; lineups and starters

Game 104: Seattle Mariners (51-52) vs. New York Mets (47-53) at 7:10 p.m. at Safeco Field.

The Mariners were off on Thursday after completing a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox with a 4-0 loss at the hands of Chris Sale.

The M’s are 5-5 in their last 10 games and trail in the standings for the final A.L. wildcard spot by 3 1/2 games. They are 30-26 at home this season.

The Mets come to Seattle 6-4 in their last 10 games and 22-25 on the road. They are fourth in the N.L. East, 14 games behind the Washington Nationals and are 9 1/2 games out of a wildcard spot.

New York has begun to sell off veterans in the final year of their contracts. The Mets traded 1B Lucas Duda to Tampa Bay earlier this week for a minor league reliever.

Transactions: The Mariners acquired RHP Erasmo Ramirez from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for RHP Steve Cishek. Ramirez, who was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by Seattle on Sept. 1, 2007, made his Major League debut with Mariners on April 9 2012 at Texas and went 7-12 with a 4.62 ERA (106 ER, 206 2/3 innings) in 47 games, 35 starts with Seattle from 2012-14 before being traded to the Rays in exchange for LHP Mike Montgomery on March 31, 2015.

The M’s recalled RHPs Casey Lawrence and Cody Martin from AAA-Tacoma, optioned RHP Andrew Moore to the Rainiers and designated INF Tyler Smith for assignment.

  • 2B Robinson Canó collected his 496th career double in the third inning on July 25 against Boston, breaking a tie with Frank Thomas and Aramis Ramirez to move into sole possession of 68th-most career doubles in MLB history. Canó is one double shy of tying Hall of Famer Sam Rice (497) for 67th-most all-time.
  • OF Ben Gamel is one of 10 players in MLB – including 1 of 4 in the A.L. – this season to be batting at least .320 with an on-base percentage of at least .370 and a slugging percentage of at least .460. Gamel (.324 AVG, .375 OBP, .463 SLG) is joined by Jose Altuve (HOU), Charlie Blackmon (COL), Carlos Correa (HOU), Marwin Gonzalez (HOU), Bryce Harper (WAS), Daniel Murphy (WAS), Buster Posey (SFG), Chris Taylor (LAD) and Justin Turner (LAD).
  • Reliever Nick Vincent has not allowed a run in 22 2/3 innings pitched over 24 appearances at Safeco Field this season, equaling the Mariners single-season club record for consecutive scoreless relief outings at home of George Sherrill (2007). Overall at home, Vincent is 1-0 with 6 holds.

This Day in Mariners History

In 1977, the Mariners’ John Montague had his consecutive batters retired string stopped at 33, tying the American League record. Montague came on in relief against Minnesota and walked the first batter he faced, the Twins’ Craig Kusick, to end his streak. The Mariners went on to win 5-2.

In 1993, Ken Griffey Jr. homered off the right-field, third deck facade off Minnesota’s Willie Banks to tie the Major League record for home runs in consecutive games. It was his eighth straight game with a HR.
