Spokane Chiefs finish 2016-17 season on high note with 7-2 win over Portland Winterhawks

The Spokane Chiefs finished the 2016-17 season on a high note, trouncing the Portland Winterhawks 7-2 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon on Sunday to close out the Western Hockey League regular season.

The Chiefs’ three ‘overagers,’ Keanu Yamamoto, Jayden Sittler and Alex Mowbray, each had honorable performances to conclude their WHL careers. Yamamoto finished with two goals and an assist, Jayden Sittler stopped 30 shots in net and Mowbray scored the Chiefs first goal of the game.

Yamamoto finished this season with career-highs in goals (24) and assists (43). He finished with 69 goals and 106 assists (175 points) in his four-year career with the Chiefs.

Kailer Yamamoto added three assists. The 18-year-old forward finished with a team-high 99 points this season.

The Chiefs converted on 3 of 6 power-play opportunities, with Keanu Yamamoto, Hudson Elynuik and Riley Woods. Woods also chipped in two assists.

The Chiefs finish the season fifth in the U.S. Division and ninth in the Western Conference with a 27-33-8-4 record (66 points).

Portland finishes fourth in the division and takes on Prince George as the No. 7 seed in the first round of playoffs.

The Chiefs ended a nine-game losing streak with the win against Portland.
