Locally: Medals pile up for Coeur d’Alene’s KTigers Taekwondo

Seventeen members of KTigers Taekwondo from Coeur d’Alene brought home 14 gold medals, 11 silvers and 15 bronze for top-three finishes at the Washington State Governor’s Cup last weekend in Lacey, Washington.

The event drew more than 1,000 Taekwondo competitors from five Western states, Alaska and Canada for competition in Poomsae (form), board breaking and sparring categories.

Juliana LaVe’, in the female 18-32 division (two gold, one silver); Kendyl Dickson, female 15-17 (one gold, one silver, one bronze); Kyra Schulz Johnson, female 12-14 (one gold, two bronze); Julia Tickemyer, female 10-11 (two silver, one bronze); James Sanders, male 12-14, (one gold, two silver); Chase Watson, male 10-11 (one gold, one silver, one bronze); and Ashton Dickinson, male 9 and younger (one gold, one silver, one bronze), won three medals each.

Watson won gold in the male 10-11 World Class Poomsae (traditional forms) and Tickemyer took bronze in the 10-11 female division in that event.

Other KTigers medalists:

Female – Heather Hoeck-Mills (33 and older), two gold; Joanne Cree (33 and older), two bronze; Simran Padda (12-14), one gold, one silver; Georgia Cree (12-14), one gold, one bronze; Sierra Cree (12-14), one gold, one bronze; Hailie Velasco (10-11), two bronze; Sophie Estes (10-11), one gold, one bronze, and Christina Sanders (family division), one silver.

Male – Dominick Ethridge (12-14), one silver, one bronze; and Blake Estes (12-14), one gold, one bronze.

Basketball

Patrick Mulligan, a Gonzaga University graduate who has spent the majority of his coaching and teaching tenure at Wallenberg High School in San Francisco, has joined the Seattle University men’s staff as director of player development, Redhawks head coach Jim Hayford announced.

Hayford, the former Whitworth and Eastern Washington coach in his first year at Seattle U, noted that both he and Mulligan were mentored by the late highly successful coach Rick Majerus, “and it is a great privilege to now partner with him.”

Bowling

John Hilden got hot at the right time and rode it to three victories and the championship of the Junior Bowlers Tour stop at Players & Spectators last Sunday.

After losing a roll-off to Mason Georgeadis and settling for the No. 3 spot in the five-player finals, Hilden proceeded to defeat Grace Martin 234-155, got revenge on Greorgeadis, 230-158, then knocked off top qualifier Blake English 228-202 for the title, capping a 692-three-game run.

Georgeadis finished third, Martin was fourth and Kameron Morgan, who had the high game of the day for the boys, a 254, finished fifth in his first appearance in the roll-off finals. He also had an 849 series.

Martin led the girls with a 244 game and 791 four-game series.

The next JBT will be Nov. 5 at North Bowl.

College scene

Justin Bonanno and Kurtis Redding, two former Spokane Braves who are playing hockey for the Bethel University Royals in St. Paul, Minnesota, have been recognized as All-American Scholars by the American Hockey Coaches Association for the 2016-17 season.

Bonanno, a junior from Colbert, had a 3.87 grade-point average, and Redding, a freshman from Mead, had a 3.78 GPA.

On the ice, Bonanno played in 19 games and collected seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. Redding had five goals and eight assists in 25 games for 13 points. Both are forwards.

  • Three Whitworth Pirates, two of them in men’s soccer, were honored as Northwest Conference Student-Athletes of the Week for the week Oct. 10-16. Jesus Nunez, the Pirates’ sophomore goalkeeper from Turlock, California, was the men’s soccer defensive selection. He opened the weekend with his first shutout of the season, turning aside six Linfield shots, and followed with five saves in a 2-1 win over Willamette. Moi Diaz, a senior from McMinnville, Oregon, had two goals against Linfield and two assists against Willamette to receive offensive honors. Rehn Reiley, a junior from Moses Lake, was the football Special Teams Player of the Week. He kicked a first-half field goal that was the margin of victory at PLU, but it was his punting – six punts for a 45-yard average – that allowed the Pirates to win the field-position battle.
  • Rachel Leshikar, North Idaho College’s sophomore libero from Kamiakin, was named NWAC East Region Defensive Player of the Week in volleyball after collecting 45 digs and scoring five aces in three road victories as the Cardinals ran their winning streak to 12.

Golf

Corey Prugh, the Community Colleges of Spokane coach, and Ryan Benzel, a former University of Idaho golfer, contributed two points apiece to the professional team that posted a 12 1/2 -7 1/2 victory over the amateurs in the 69th Hudson Cup matches that wound up Friday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland.

Prugh collected points with a victory in Friday’s singles matches and Thursday’s foursome. Benzel, who grew up in Ritzville and is now director of instruction at Sahalee Country Club in Redmond, Washington, scored in Thursday’s foursome and four-ball competitions.

Andrew and Aaron Whalen of Ephrata each scored a point for the amateurs with victories in Thursday’s four-ball.

In the 26th Senior Hudson Cup, the amateurs won 11-9.

Steve Prugh from Manito Golf & Country Club and Craig Schuh of Deer Park Golf Course teamed for a1-up victory in Thursday’s four-ball for the pros and Prugh added a half-point in foursome. There were no area players in the Senior Hudson Cup.
