Teen sentenced to prison for shooting Washington man

MOSCOW, Idaho – A teen was sentenced Thursday to up 25 years in prison for the shooting death of an 18-year-old Washington man.

Keagan Tennant, 17, was accused of shooting and killing Timothy Reeves of Pullman during a camping trip last July near Troy in northern Idaho, the Moscow-Pullman Daily News reported.

Tennant and his friend, Matthew McKetta, hid Reeves’ body and stole a car from a Pizza Hut deliver driver at gunpoint before fleeing to Curlew, Washington, authorities said.

Tennant pleaded guilty to the charges in January as part of an agreement with Latah County prosecutors.

McKetta has pleaded not guilty.

Tennant’s sentence includes five years for four felony charges including involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and robbery.

He will be held at the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections until his 21st birthday, said Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson.

It will be up to Latah County 2nd District Court Judge John Stegner to decide where Tennant will go from there.

“I need to be shown that he is not a danger to society before he can be released to society,” Stegner said.

Victim impact statements from Reeves’ family were read during Tennant’s sentencing hearing.

After Reeves’ death, his 10-year-old brother, Logan, said his family will never be the same again.

“Everything fell apart like a Jenga,” his statement read.

Tennant apologized to Reeves’s family through a statement read by his lawyer, Public Defender Deborah McCormick.

“Tim was my friend and I’ll miss him,” she read. “I know there is nothing I can do to make up for Tim’s death but I will always try to.”
