Eight people and several pets were displaced from their homes Wednesday night after a fire tore through two units of an upper South Hill apartment complex.

Firefighters from Spokane County Fire District 8 and the Spokane Fire Department responded to calls of a fast-moving fire at about 10:30 p.m., arriving to find flames shooting out of a second floor unit of the Regal Heights Apartments, 2702 E. 55th Ave.

Lonne Rash, assistant fire chief of Fire District 8, said firefighters were able to knock down the forward progress of the fire within 10 minutes, but not before flames had crept up to a third floor unit above. After the smoke cleared, it was discovered that three units were impacted – two from fire and smoke damage, one from minor water damage.

A search was conducted shortly after, which showed no pets or occupants inside. However, four people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. One cat was taken by SCRAPS for treatment.

“Everybody was accounted for,” Rash said.

Altogether, Rash said eight residents were displaced. The American Red Cross was on scene to provide temporary housing.
